South African Embassy

The South African Embassy in Athens once again celebrated Heritage Day and showcased South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and diversity which is widely recognised as the “rainbow nation”.
The South African Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, welcomed and thanked all present at the occassion. It was of great regard to have the Republic of Zambia well represented by our Honorary Consul of the Zambian Consulate in the Hellenic Republic Ms. Rose Chizi at the event.
This year’s Heritage Day was celebrated in combination with the Centenary of the life and the legacy of Mr. Nelson Mandela a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as the first black President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

The Heritage Month in South Africa is of great importance as South Africans come together as a nation to celebrate South Africa’s rich heritage and it is a fact that South Africa is home to eight of the 1031 World Heritage Sites which are recognised by the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation as places of outstanding cultural and historical importance.

The South African Embassy also dedicated the event to the Centenary, the life and the legacy of Mr. Nelson Mandela by reading out a few letters Mr. Mandela had written his family while he was in prison. It was an occasion to reflect on Mr. Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy, and to follow his call to “make of the world a better place.”One hundred years after his birth, Mandela’s example of courage and compassion continue to inspire the world.
